Four Fates of Man - South American religious imagery

Extraordinary Quality

At the RA for their Spain and the Hispanic World Exhibition, drawn from the collection of the Hispanic Society Museum & Library in New York.

This extraordinary collection of first rate art (in its widest sense) from Spain and its American colonies, initiated at the turn of the 20th Century, includes artifacts from Spanish pre-history through to paintings of Goya and the modernist Sorolla, and many South American pictures and artifacts.

Unusually for the RA about a third of the artists and fabricators are ‘unknown’ – but then they start with Beaker-ware!

All the exhibits are beautiful, some astounding and some (Goya’s Duchess of Alba) very familiar.

Well worth a visit whilst it’s on (and saves a trip to New York!)

  • Excellent review! I must make sure to book and see the beaker-ware! Thanks Julian, sounds like a great exhibit
Seems like there's a great mix of mediums to enjoy, as well as stretching overtime!
Looking forward to the next one!
