The girls, dancing

I could be happy…!

On Sunday to the matinee of The Boyfriend at the Menier.

This 1950’s pastiche of a 1920’s musical is full of joyous ‘homage’ to older styles (and to Noel Coward – viz his ‘Room with a View’).

Its runs are almost always successful – the light froth of its content full of fun and wit – hugely unchallenging, and hugely entertaining.Boyfriend 3

In the front row of the tiny Menier, with the chorus almost in our laps, the up-close-and-personal nature of this production was a complete delight.

A quality cast, including an original London Hamilton cast member (Jack Butterworth), Amara Okereke as a delightful and sweet Polly, Adrian Edmondson in great form, Janie Dee as Mme Dubonnet and Issy Van Randwyck, partnering Edmondson, gave it all (and were due to do it again in a couple of hours).

It’s booked to transfer to Toronto at the end of the Menier run*, but I really wouldn’t be surprised to see it back in London. All the singing and dancing you could want, and the silliest plot ever.
